This data is the collated data containing five subsets of data:

  1. Ratings of the importance of listed emotions in music
  2. Ratings of the arousal of listed emotions
  3. Ratings of the valence of listed emotions
  4. Ratings of the perception of listed emotions in 8 excerpts of Western Classical music
  5. Ratings of the perception of listed emotions in 8 excerpts of North American Jazz.

Each subset includes the evaluation of 12 emotion pairs as indicated in the names using the following key:

1 anger, aggression -- ang
2 confidence, pride -- con
3 enthusiasm, interest -- ent
4 indifference, boredom -- ind
5 joy, happiness -- joy
6 longing, nostalgia -- lon
7 relaxation, calmness -- rel
8 repulsion, aversion -- rep
9 sadness, depression -- sad
10 spirituality, transcendence -- spi
11 tenderness, love -- ten
12 tense, unease -- tns

Eight excerpts of WC (western classical music), and NJ (north american jazz) were presented to participants. The key for these excerpts are:

j=joy (or positive valence and high arousal), c=calm (or positive valence and low arousal), s=sad (or negative valence and low arousal), t=tension (or negative valence and high arousal). Additionally, these indicators are qualified by an m=moderate and e=extreme, indicating a more moderate and extreme version.

Four groups of participants participated in the research: younger (18-30) and older (56-68) participants from Japan or UK.
