We undertook a mapping review and time-constrained systematic review (in September-October 2020) to explore potential and existing models of local authority-based research systems. We searched databases, grey literature and references/citations of relevant sources, undertook systematic screening of titles, abstracts and full texts, and synthesised relevant data according to the characteristics of research systems, quality assessing for relevance, rigour and richness. We examined nine models in-depth and from these developed a typology of research systems. The review methods and findings will be published in the journal Evidence and Policy. The data deposited here detail the data extraction from the mapping review stage (in an Excel/CSV sheet), and the in-depth data extraction of the nine research models (all in one Word/PDF file), including a codebook to clarify the data extraction of core activities and research capacity subsystems, with references to the sources we used (also in a Word/PDF file).
