Forecast of the energetic electron environment of the radiation belts

dataset

This directory contains the output data sets from the VNC run for the period including the March 17, 2015 (St Patrick's day geomagnetic disturbance), as a zip archive.

There are two runs, one using the fixed L* coupling (directory *_fixed) that assumes L*gso = 6.2, the other using an L* that depends upon Kp (directory *_var).

Each of these sub-directories contains

VNC input files

  • Bf.dat - boundary flux scaling parameters (plain text)
  • Kp.dat - Kalues of Kp index (plain text)

VNC output files

  • OutPSD*.dat - Files containing electron flux PSD from  VERB (plain text)
  • perpgrid_*.plt - Grid information (plain text)
  • radgrid_*.plt - Grid information (plain text)

The data from which the figures showing the variation of L* as various functions of Kp may be found in the file lstar.mat (MATLAB structure). This structure is dimensioned as follows

data(longitude,Kp,date,pitchangle)

where these indices in each dimension correspond to the following values

longitude=0:5:355

kp=[0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7]

date=[2015 3 21; 2015 6 21; 2015 9 21; 2015 12 21]

pitchangle=[10 30 50 70 90]

MATLAB code to access the VNC output data files is available from corresponding author.
