‘What goes unspoken, goes unnoticed’: Uncovering the complex meanings of young motherhood in Morelos, Mexico’ / ‘Lo que no se dice, no existe’: Descubriendo los complejos significados de la maternidad joven en Morelos, México [with summaries]

This report details findings of research which seeks to understand how interventions correspond to the needs and lived realities of a group of young mothers from different towns and villages in the state of Morelos. In a creative workshop coordinated with the Secretaría de Educación Pública and alongside colleagues from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Campus Morelos (UNAM Morelos), 10 mothers under 20 (who had become pregnant aged between 14 and 19) carried out drawing and bodymapping methods while responding to questions about their lived experiences of motherhood. The broader research project repeated this methodology with groups of 8–10 young mothers in Granma (Cuba) and Bogota (Colombia). We followed up with an online projective technique task. While in Morelos, we also organised a symposium which brought together academics and ‘frontline’ professionals, who work with adolescent mothers or on the topic of teenage pregnancy in the state. Representatives attending from various government agencies including IMPAJOVEN, IMSS, ISSSTE, and INSP discussed the existing barriers to teen pregnancy prevention, as well as obstacles for supporting already existing adolescent mothers in the state of Morelos and beyond. Their interventions are included in the contextualisation and analysis of this report.

Este informe detalla los hallazgos de un proyecto que busca entender cómo las intervenciones corresponden a las necesidades y realidades vividas de un grupo de madres jóvenes de diferentes ciudades y pueblos del estado de Morelos. En un taller creativo coordinado con la Secretaría de Educación Pública y junto con colegas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Campus Morelos (UNAM de Morelos), diez madres menores de 20 años (quienes habían quedado embarazadas entre los 14 y los 19 años) llevaron a cabo métodos de dibujo y mapeo corporal mientras respondían a preguntas sobre sus experiencias vividas de la maternidad. Este grupo de muestra, de madres que asisten a la escuela, representa una minoría, dada la fuerte correlación entre el abandono escolar y el embarazo adolescente. En las réplicas en Cuba y Bogotá, hicimos un seguimiento con una tarea de técnica proyectiva en línea. Mientras estuvimos en Morelos, también organizamos un simposio que reunió a académicos y profesionales de «primera línea», quienes trabajan con madres adolescentes o sobre el tema del embarazo adolescente en Cuernavaca y el estado de Morelos. En este contexto, también se incluyen en este informe las intervenciones de varias agencias gubernamentales como IMPAJOVEN, IMSS, ISSSTE, y INSP.
