Protocol: The Role of Community Pharmacists in Medicines Optimisation for Housebound People
ABSTRACT
Introduction: Housebound older adults in the UK face significant challenges related to medication management, including polypharmacy, inappropriate prescribing, and adverse drug events. Community pharmacists are well-positioned to optimize medicines use in this population, but their specific role remains unclear.
Methods: This scoping review will follow PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We will search MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, grey literature sources, and trial registries for studies on community pharmacists' involvement in medicines optimization for housebound older adults in the UK. Inclusion criteria encompass interventions, services, or initiatives related to medicines optimization involving community pharmacists. Two reviewers will independently screen citations, chart data, and synthesize findings narratively. Formal quality appraisal will not be conducted. Evidence gaps and future research recommendations will be highlighted.
